SPECIAL
PROJECTS

From managing complex expeditions to the bottom of the Earth’s five oceans to providing design advice on the worlds first purpose-built range of expedition yachts, SeaXplorer, EYOS Expeditions is the leader in highly specialized project oversight in the expedition industry.

THE FIVE DEEPS
EXPEDITION

The expedition covered 47,000 nautical miles / 87,000 km in 10 months.

EYOS Expeditions provided expedition oversight for the world’s first successful manned expedition to the deepest point in each of the five oceans, as well as the ultimate validation of a unique deep-sea, manned, fully-classified research submersible.

Led by extreme explorer Victor Vescovo and Expedition Leader Rob McCallum, co-founder of EYOS Expeditions, the Five Deeps Expedition was the first to reach the deepest point in each of the Earth’s five oceans: the Puerto Rico Trench in the Atlantic, South Sandwich Trench in the Southern Ocean, Java Trench in the Indian Ocean, Challenger Deep in the Pacific and Molloy Deep in the Arctic.

THE INTERSTELLAR
EXPEDITION

Sled | Special Projects | EYOS

EYOS Expeditions coordinated the Interstellar Expedition, which was led by the expedition’s Chief Scientist, Harvard University Astrophysicist Avi Loeb, and Expedition Leader Rob McCallum of EYOS.

During the expedition, the team identified and collected over 70 metallic spheres unmatched to any existing alloys in our solar system, indicating a first-of-its-kind finding of interstellar evidence in human history. Staged out of Lorengau, Manus Island in June 2023, the team conducted an extensive towed-sled survey over the seafloor, covering over 175 kilometers of search-lines over the calculated path of the meteorite’s path. “That we were able to collect sub-millimeter spherules from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, near the fireball coordinates of the first recognized interstellar meteor, is a testimony to the success of the scientific method,” said Professor Loeb.

BBC BLUE PLANET II

Filmed during the austral summer of 2016-17,  EYOS Expeditions supported the filming of the BBC’s Blue Planet II in Antarctica.

EYOS Expeditions’ ice pilots, Expedition Leader Martin Enckell, and additional EYOS staff collaborated with the award-winning BBC team on this exciting endeavour. Together, the team provided support, and assistance with permitting, polar logistics, and operational support for Alucia’s three-month, three-voyage deployment to Antarctica.

FIRST-EVER 4K TRANSMISSION FROM ANTARCTICA

Working in marathon shifts in tough conditions, EYOS and Japanese, German, British, and Chilean teams enabled the first-ever 4K transmission from Antarctica in 2020.

A key initial challenge to this mission was locating a suitable site: the location had to face the predominant satellite path, be of sufficient elevation to acquire (and hold) the satellite above the horizon, offer a beach for landing equipment, be free of wildlife, and away from the tourist traffic.

EYOS’ contribution to this groundbreaking project was providing an Expedition Coordinator, a Polar Dive Supervisor, and an Ice Pilot to supplement the team of ship’s crew, television technical staff, and operational personnel. The combination of EYOS’ expertise in the region and the technical know-how of the broadcast team, made the perfect formula to successfully complete the project.

QUITE LITERALLY,
OUT OF THIS WORLD

The EYOS team has now planned, managed, and led hundreds of expeditions of all types, and increasingly, these are privately funded, science-focused initiatives. We enable some of the most ambitious projects on Earth, but this one is, quite literally, out of this world. ”
Rob McCallum on the Interstellar Project
